Meta tags: Description and Keywords
Overview of Description Meta tag and Keyword Meta-tag: Meta-tags are not displayed on the web page in the browser but they do appear in the source code of your web page in the header (<head>) section. Many engines do not necessarily use the meta-tags for search engine "ranking" purposes but they may use them in the search engine results description of your site. Bottom line is you don't want to skip putting keyword rich AND compelling content in the 2 main meta-tags below.

Timetable: Day 2 (Learn about it), Day 3-8 (Apply it)

Here are some fundamental rules regarding meta-tags. Vary the content in the meta-tags of each individual web page. Keep character length to less than 300 characters.

Meta-tags are a good place to put in some good copy about the value or unique selling proposition that your web page offers to the search engine user. You should certainly investigate the meta-tags of your competitors and try to include some of their keywords in case you missed something in your keyword research steps above. We generally try to match up the <title> and meta-tags with similar content for consistency purposes.

Examples of how to structure each meta-tag (remember to use quote marks as below for proper html syntax):

  • <meta name="description" content="PHP Shopping Cart Software Ecommerce Solutions Ecommerce Platform WebCart's PHP shopping cart software lets you easily build, market and keep track of an ecommerce shopping!">

  • <meta name="keywords" content="PHP Shopping Cart Software Ecommerce Solutions, Shopping cart software, PHP Shopping cart software, Ecommerce solutions, Online storefront, Shopping cart, E-commerce software, Web store, Online storefront, WebCart">
