Off-Site Linking Tactic #9: Social Bookmarking
Author: Jason Ciment File:
Off-Site Linking Tactic #9: Social Bookmarking Overview of the Social Bookmarking Phenomena
Basically this is a really great link building strategy. When you use a social bookmarking service and you "Tag" a web page, you are voting for it and at the same time connecting the page to a particular keyword (ie. The tag you use). The more people who bookmark your page with the same keyword, the more likely that page actually matches the keyword/tag associated with it. This whole tagging concept is not just applied to pages but to any web content including images, audio files, videos, powerpoints. There are perhaps 150 tagging repositories where you can post your content and then tag them. This section illustrates a few ways to use social bookmarking for SEO purposes.

Image syndication:

Almost every blogger has custom images they use within their blog. Why not generate traffic and one way links though them? Flicker (http://www.flickr.com/) does just that. By uploading and tagging your images to Flickers website, you are able to send links back to your blog without having to do a lots of work.

Below are a few image sites you should post images to.

A list of image directories to submit your images to are also listed here.

Podcasting syndication:

Podcasting is a great way generate buzz about your blog and products. In addition, you get to submit your podcast to the the major podcasting search engines and directories which results in more one way links to your site.

Starting a podcast has never been easier. The first thing you need to do is download a program to capture your voice and convert it into a music file (either .wav or .mp3). You can either buy a program or even download freeware. I've listed some podcasting software options here.

If you use WordPress, you can download a plug in that manages the whole process of uploading an MP3 podcast right onto your web site and posting the podcast just like a regular blog posting.

Once you've got your first podcast created you will need to create a web directory to store your podcast files. I suggest you use a keyword rich directory name along with the word podcast so you know what is inside this directory.

The next step is to register your podcasting directory with podcast sites and podcast directories. There is software you can use to register your site with many podcast directories. You can also add the podcast directories to your web directory submission software and use that for adding your podcasts to directories.

A list of podcasting directories to submit your podcast to are also listed here. Here's the process to follow each time you load a podcast online (either you used an ftp program like Cuteftp or LeapFtp OR you used the plugin for WordPress):
  • Run the XML sitemap generator to update your XML sitemap
  • Each time you load a new podcast you "ping" those sites letting them know there is a new podcast up to review or download or listen to. There are two ways to ping these sites. You can do it manually at pingoat.com or you can use special pinging software. As well, if you load a podcast through a WordPress posting, WordPress will automatically ping any sites listed in the pinging area of WordPress.

Video syndication:

This is basically the same concept as podcasting syndication. The only difference is you are submitting your videos to different directories.

What you need for videocasting is the following:
  1. Software to make a video
  2. A list of videocasting sites and directories on which to list your videocasting feeds
  3. Software to list your videocasting feed URL
  4. Software to ping the directories each time you upload a new videocast

A list of directories to submit your videocast too are also listed here:

Myspace (this really requires a separate course because it is so vast)
