Overview of Blogging for SEO This
often overlooked and much taken for granted source of fresh updated and
interactive content (due to visitor comments) is potentially one of the
most powerful weapons in optimization. There are 2 reasons for its
effectiveness.
First is that the content by its definition is
fresh unless the blog is just not updated. That freshness gets a high
rating from the search engines. Secondly, with all the power tools
available for WordPress, the minute you post a blog entry, you can
instantly and automatically update dozens of web sites with a link to
your fresh content. Those sites – known as social bookmarking sites –
are spidered throughout the day and your appearance on those sites
through your blog can produce many powerful incoming links.
Generally,
everything about your blog should be targeted towards your primary
keywords and secondary keywords. This means that the directory name,
the blog description, each of the blog categories, the blog titles you
use when posting blogs and the blog URL's must contain some combination
of your targeted keywords. Again, we will be using the primary keyword
of "shopping cart platform" to illustrate our examples.
This
section describes a system of blogging for 120 days that is almost
foolproof in its effectiveness. When combined with the rest of the SEO
strategies described above, you will be sitting very pretty drinking
afternoon tea while your rankings soar and traffic follows.
The steps to follow include:
- Install Wordpress and Name Your Blog
- Blog Title and Description
- Blog Categories
- Wordpress Plug-ins
- Customize Wordpress
Timetable: Day 9
Install Wordpress and Name Your Blog:
Download
wordpress from http://www.wordpress.org. Unzip the file and upload it
to your website. For installation instructions, visit http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress
For directions on how to name your blog
Blog Title and Description:
When
filling out the descriptive information in the blog configuration
screens of WordPress you want to continue your keyword rich efforts.
- Name your Blog with your primary keyword "Shopping Cart Software Blog"
- Use
your secondary keyword in your description. It would look something
like "Educating the public on buying the perfect Shopping Cart Software
system"
Blog Categories:
Every
blog needs categories to organize the blog postings for maximum SEO
effectiveness. Without categories web users would not be able to locate
specific topics they might be searching for. However, what most people
don't realize is that search engines also look at categories and it's
important to give those little robots who spider your site clear
keyword rich category names.
When creating blog categories
(you will see them displayed on the right side of your word press
posting screen) remember to use category names that also contain your
keywords. For example, you might create the following categories:
- "Shopping cart software benefits" as opposed to benefits.
- "Shopping cart software features" as opposed to features.
- "Discount shopping cart software" as oppose to discounts.
Install Plug-ins to WordPress:
Ultimate Tag Warrior - Creates dynamic pages from tags you specify on each posting.
WP-Shortstat - Analyze visitors who come to your blog
Evermore - Abbreviate all posts when viewed on multiple post pages. This makes all posts behave as if there is a "" at an appropriate spot inside the content.
Subscribe
Me - Displays a tile with subscribe buttons to collect email addresses.
To use it you call the_subscribe_links(); where you want the tile to
appear. Alternatively, do nothing and the tile will display when
wp_meta(); is called.
FAlbum - A plugin for displaying your Flicker photosets and photos in a gallery format on your Wordpress site.
AutoSocialPoster - Plugin to ping social bookmarking sites.
Customize WordPress:
Add Google Adsense to the area directly under your blog's title as well as to your blog's side bar.
Add to the footer of your blog. Important: You need Ultimate Tag Warrior for this to work.
Edit sidebar.php to add static keyword rich content into your WordPress pages
- "Article Search" should be renamed to "Shopping Cart Software Article Search"
- "Favorite Links" should be changed to "Shopping Cart Software Related Sites".
- "Subscribe to this site" should be changed to "Shopping Cart Software Newsletter"
"Subscribe to newsletter" could be renamed to "Subscribe to Shopping Cart Software Newsletter"
